Public Act No. 23-135 – Section 23

SECTION 23: Pilot Program for Non-medical Transportation Services in Northwestern Region

What it says: Section 23 directs the Department of Developmental Services to set up a pilot program that offers nonmedical transportation services for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the northwestern region of the state. The department will issue a request for proposals by December 1, 2023, to choose a transportation provider for this program. The services will include transportation to and from work, educational facilities, stores, and other places within a 20-mile radius of the individual’s residence. The service will be available at least two days per week, and one of those days must be a weekend or include evening hours. The program may also be expanded to serve other individuals, such as those with other developmental disabilities or those who are 60 years or older, as long as it does not negatively impact the original target group. The department will submit an annual report evaluating the program’s effectiveness.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child with an intellectual disability, this pilot program could be a significant help. It aims to make transportation more accessible for your child, especially for essential activities like going to work or school. This could enhance your child’s independence and quality of life.
