Public Act No. 23-137 – Section 24

SECTION 24: Promoting Training Programs for Safe Use of Public Transit

What it says: Section 24 mandates that the Department of Transportation must create a notice by January 1, 2024, about the availability of training programs funded by the department. These programs are designed to teach individuals how to use commuter railroad systems and public transit services safely. This notice will be sent to the Department of Developmental Services and the State Education Resource Center. The Department of Developmental Services will then distribute this notice to its service providers, and the State Education Resource Center will publish the notice on its website.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child with a disability, this section is beneficial for you. It means that there will be training programs available to teach your child how to use public transportation safely. This is particularly important for fostering independence and mobility for your child. You can expect to find this information through service providers associated with the Department of Developmental Services and on the State Education Resource Center’s website.
