Public Act No. 23-137 – Section 25

SECTION 25: New Training Requirements for Public Passenger Endorsement on Driver's Licenses

What it says: Section 25 modifies existing laws about who can get or renew an operator’s license with a public passenger endorsement, which allows them to transport the public. The changes require that, in addition to existing requirements like age, lack of certain criminal convictions, and physical fitness, applicants must also watch a video presentation. This video will be developed in consultation with various departments, including Aging and Disability Services and Developmental Services. The video will provide instruction and best practices on how to interact appropriately with disabled persons who may be receiving services from these departments. This video must be watched by the applicant before the license with a public passenger endorsement is issued or renewed, effective January 1, 2024.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child with a disability, this section is beneficial for you and your child. It ensures that drivers who are licensed to transport the public, including potentially your child, are trained in how to interact appropriately with individuals with disabilities. This could make public transportation safer and more accessible for your child.
