Public Act No. 23-137 – Section 28

SECTION 28: Online and Optional In-Person Training on Special Education and Transition Services

What it says: Section 27 mandates that the Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education create a training program by July 1, 2024. This program will focus on the legal requirements and best practices for special education and transition services, as defined in the previous section (Section 26). The training will be available through on-demand online courses and may also be offered in person at the bureau’s discretion. The program will be updated at least once a year.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child with special needs, this section aims to improve the quality of special education and transition services by ensuring that educators are well-trained. The training program will be available online, making it accessible for educators across different locations. This could lead to better-informed teachers and staff, which in turn could benefit your child’s educational experience and transition to adulthood.
