Public Act No. 23-137 – Section 29

SECTION 29: Online Resource Hub for Special Education Transition Services

What it says: Section 29 mandates the State Education Resource Center, in collaboration with various state departments and offices, to develop and maintain an online listing of transition resources, services, and programs for children requiring special education. This online listing will include plain language descriptions, eligibility requirements, and application deadlines and instructions for each resource, service, and program. The listing will be updated annually and linked on the websites of the collaborating departments and offices.

For the school year starting July 1, 2024, and each year thereafter, the Department of Education’s State-wide Transition Services Coordinator will ensure this online listing is updated and accurate. They will also distribute a notice about this online resource to each local or regional board of education, who will in turn distribute it to parents of children requiring special education in grades six to twelve.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child who requires special education, this section aims to make it easier for you to find and understand the transition resources, services, and programs available for your child. You will receive a notice about this online resource during a planning and placement team meeting for your child if they are in grades six to twelve. This should help you better navigate the various services and programs that can assist your child in transitioning to adulthood.
