Public Act No. 23-137 – Section 30

SECTION 30: Free Training Program for Transition Coordinators and School Staff

What it says: Section 30 mandates that the Department of Education, in consultation with other relevant departments and regional educational service centers, develop a training program by July 1, 2024. This training program is designed for transition coordinators, educators, and school paraprofessionals who are involved in providing transition services to students with disabilities. The training program will adhere to the minimum standards set by the State-wide Transition Services Coordinator, as outlined in section 26 of this act. Additionally, each regional educational service center is required to offer this training program at no cost to those who are interested in becoming a transition coordinator or providing transition services.

What it means for parents: If you are a parent of a child with a disability, this section is designed to ensure that the professionals working with your child are well-trained in providing transition services. These services are crucial for helping your child move from school to other post-school activities, such as further education, employment, or independent living. The training is also free of charge, making it more accessible for educators and paraprofessionals to receive the necessary training to better assist your child.
